The Renewable Energy group will aim to support the development and provision of a
sustainable energy future for Scotland.

Energy issues will make a major impact on communities, and we have to explore
how this will affect the role of local authorities and consider what action authorities
might take.

Local authorities will have to look at how they can ensure the process of change is about
‘gain not pain’ for their communities.  Possible gains from energy action include:

•   Reduced costs for the council, releasing 10-20% of energy budgets for other services.

•   Warmer homes, reduced costs and fewer health risks for the elderly and vulnerable.

•   Improved management of change in economic structures and greater business
competitiveness. Opportunities in construction, manufacturing and renewable
generation leading to local wealth generation.

The group will look at how local authorities can engage with the local community,
other government agencies, energy providers, householders and businesses, through
the community planning process, which should enable a better understanding of
sustainable energy issues and provide the impetus to agree local priorities that will
support national objectives.
